Human Parvovirus B19 (B19) infection is common worldwide, but is often asymptomatic. B19 can cause, besides Erythema Infectiosum, aplastic crisis in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia, arthropathy, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, fetal infections.

The aim of this study was to determine the rates of Parvovirus B19 specific IgG and IgM antibodies in children <15 years of age (n=126) and >20 years of adults (n=44) and to determine B19 DNA amounts in B19 specific IgM antibody positive patients by Real-time PCR. The sera were screened for the virus using Parvovirus B19 IgG/IgM kit (Focus, USA) with Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. B19 DNA amounts were determined using LightCycler - Parvovirus B19 Quantification kit (Roche, Germany) by Real-time PCR method. B19 specific IgM antibody were found positive in 13 patients and different amounts of B19 DNA were found positive with Real-time PCR in these patients.

The B19 specific antibodies rates was 26.9% for IgG and 9.5% for IgM in children <15 years of age and 54.5% for IgG, 2.2% for IgM in >20 years of adults. For taking accurate results about seroprevalence it must be done more studies including much more number of patients of different age groups.
