Nasal Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) carriage is more frequently seen in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) than in normal population. In this study nasal S.aureus carriage was investigated in patients with DM treated with insulin or oral hypoglycemic tablets. 100 patients with DM and 70 healthy subjects were enrolled to the study. Classical methods were used for the identification of S.aureus and methicilline resistance was evaluated by disc diffusion method according to NCCLS criteria. From eight of 36 (22.2%) patients treated with insulin methicilline sensitive S.aureus (MSSA) and from 4 (11.1%) methicilline resistant S.aureus (MRSA) were isolated. From six of a 64(9.3%) patients treated with oral hypoglycemic tablets MSSA and from two (3.1%) MRSA were obtained. In patients who were on insulin therapy, S.aureus carriage was higher than in patients on oral hypoglycemic tablets (p=0.025). In control group from two (2.8%) subjects MSSA and from two (2.8%) MRSA were isolated. S.aureus carriage was seen in 20 patients with DM (20%) and 4 subjects in control group (5.7%), (p=0.016). Nasal S.aureus carriage of patients with DM was higher, being more in patients treated with insulin therapy, than in normal population. S.aureus carriage should be taken into consideration and the appropriate treatment should be done to prevent S.aureus infections which may cause serious complication in patients with DM.
