Nasal Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) carriage may be the reason for most of the nosocomial infections. In this study, the ratio of nasal S. aureus carriage in hospital staff and their antimicrobial sensitivities were investigated. Nasal swabs were obtained from 162 staff of Manisa Government Hospital. Nasal S. aureus carriage was found in 35 (21.6) of the staff and 5 (14.2%) of them were meticillin resistant. Resistance rates of isolated S. aureus strains to various antimicrobial agents were as follows; for ampxicillin clavulanic acid (AMC) 54.2%, for erithromycin 28.5%, for rifamipicin 40%, for clindamycin 28.5%, for ciprofloxacin 17.1%, for trimethoprim sulphamethoxazole (TMP-STX) 25.7%, for gentamycin 42.8%. All of the isolated S. aureus strains were resistant to penicillin and suspectible to vancomycin. There was no statistically significant difference in nasal S. aureus carriage between profession groups (p>0.05).
