Keywords: Urinary tract infections, antibiotic susceptibility

In this study, we aimed to detect the frequency of bacteria isolated from urine presented to Microbiology Laboratory of Aziziye Hospital of Atatürk University, and antibiotic susceptibilities of these bacteria and the existence of extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) in bacteria between July 2000 and February 2001. We determined 156 E.coli (68.4%),18 Klebsiella sp. (7.9%), 10 Enterobacter sp. (4.4%),16 Pseudomonas sp. (7%), 2 Proteus sp. (0.9%), 2 Serratia sp. (0.9%), 12 coagulase- negative staphylococci (CNS) (5.3%), 6 Staphylococcus aureus (2.6%), 6 Enterococcus sp. (2.6%) in 228 culture positive urine samples. According to National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards, disk diffusion method was used for in-vitro susceptibility testing. For Gram negative bacteria, antibiotic susceptibility were; imipenem 98%, isepamicin 96.1%, amikacin 89.7%, netilmicin 84.3%, meropenem 84.3%, gentamicin 69.6%, levofloxacin 68.6%, tobramycin 67.6%, ceftriaxone 65.7%, cefepime 59.8%, cefotaxime 53.9%, cefoperazone-sulbactam 53%, cefoperazone 49%, tetracycline 43.1 % amoxicillin-clavulanic acid 42.2%, trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole42.2%, cefazolin 38.2%, ciprofloxacin 37.3%, cefuroxime sodium 31.4%, aztreonam 29.4%, ampicillin %1. Imipenem and isepamicin were found to be the most effective agents for Gram negative bacteria. Antibiotic susceptibility for CNS were as vancomycin 100%, isepamicin 91.7%, gentamicin 83.3%, levofloxacin 50%, ciprofloxacin 33.3%,trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole 25%, tetracycline 16.7%, clindamycin 8.3%penicillin 0%. Vancomycin and isepamicin were the most effective for CNS strains. On the other hand for S.aureus, the antibiotic susceptibility was detected as penicillin 0%, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole 16.7%, vancomycin 100%, ciprofloxacin 66.7%, levofloxacin 33.3%, gentamicin 66.6%, tetracycline 33.3%, clindamycin 16.7%, isepamicin 50%. Vancomycin, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin were the most effective agents for S.aureus. The susceptibility for Enterococcus sp. were as penicillin 83.3%, vancomycin 100%, ciprofloxacin 16.7%, levofloxacin 66.7%, gentamicin 33.3%, tetracycline 33.3%, isepamicin 66.7%. Vancomycin and penicillin were the most effective antibiotics for Enterococcus sp. According to our study, the existence of extended spectrum beta-lactamase of Gram negative bacteria were 8.9% for E.coli, 33.3% for Klebsiella sp., 20% for Enterobacter sp., 0% for Proteus sp., 0% for Serratia sp., 37.5% for Pseudomonas sp.
