Keywords: Enterococcus, high- level aminoglycoside resistance, vancomycin resistance, beta-latamase activity

In this study, it was aimed to determine and to evaluate the antibiotic susceptibilities of the 144 enteroccus strains from various clinical specimen. The identification of strains at species level were done by using streptococcus ID Panel- Sceptor System (Becton Dickenson) (64,6%) were identifed as Enterococcus faecalis, 43 ( 29,8%) as Enterococcus faecium, four as Enterococcus durans/ Enterococcus hirae, two as Enterococcus raffinosus and in rest of two strains, Enterococcus casseliflavus / Enterococcus gallinarum High level gentamicin resistance (HLGR) and high level streptomicin resistance (HLSR) were found in 38 (26,4%) and 32 (22,2%) of the 144 Enteroccus strains, respectively. In E. faecalis, HLGR was in 17,2% and HLSR was in 16.1% ın E. faecium, HLGR and HLSR were determined as 48.8% and 34,9% respectively.

Beta lactamase activity has been tested in the strains to determine whether it has role in ampicillin resistance. None of the strains showed beta lactamase activity. Vancomycin resistance has been studied with agar screening method according to the NCCLS and no resistance was detected.

In conclusion, treatment should be planned considering high level aminoglycoside resistance (HLAR) for better result.
