The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of Salmonella (n=36) and Shigella (n=29) strains isolated in Microbiology Laboratory of Celal Bayar University Medical Faculty to antibiotics commonly used in the ampiric treatment of acute infectious diarrhea such as ampicillin, chloramphenicol, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and other antimicrobial agents like amoxicilline-clavulanate, ciprofloxacin, cefotaxime and imipenem by disc-diffusion method. The highest resistance rate was 35% to chloramphenicol. The resistance rates to ampicillin, trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole, amoxicilline-clavulanate and cefotaxime were 30%, 30%, 15% and 4%, respectively. No resistant strains to ciprofloxacin and imipenem was detected. As the result of this study it can be suggested that quinolones may be a good alternative in the treatment of enteric infections due to Salmonella and Shigella strains.
