In this study the medical records of 2710 specimens arrived to the mycobacteriology laboratory of Gaziantep Universty Medical Faculty from May 1998 through May 2001 were evaluated retrospectively. Specimens were stained by Ehrlich Ziehl Neelsen method and the incidence of acidfast bacteria was found to be 4.76 %. After decontamination and homogenisation procedures, specimens were in oculoted into Bactec Media BACTEC TB 460 Antituberculous susceptibility tests of the isolated strains were performed to streptomycine, isoniazid, rifampin and ethambutol with the same method. In 229 (8.45 %) of the specimens Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and in six (0.22 %) cases MOTT strains were isolated. Antituberculous susceptibility tests of 201 isolates showed in 82 (40.79 %) of cases resistance to one or more of the antituberculous drugs. Single drug resistance occured mostly to isoniazid (13.93 %)which was followed by ethambutol (3.48 %), rifampicin (2.98 %) and streptomycin (1.99 %). The rate of resistance to two drugs was seen in 16 (7.96 %) cases, to three drugs in 19 (9.45 %) cases and to four drugs in 2 (0.99 %) cases. Although the total number of the specimens sending to our mycobacteriology laboratory had increased in the last years, the incidence of positive cultures and resistant strains did not change.
