Keywords: Intensive care unit, Candida, antifungal susceptibility

The aim of this study is to determine the species types of Candida strains which have been isolated from intensive care unit (ICU) of our hospital and to assess the invitro efficacy of various antifungal agents on these microorganisms. Growth of Candida were observed in 205 (19.33 %) out of 1060 clinical samples between January 1998 and December 1999. Onehundred and twelve (54.63 %) of the isolates were from urine, 58 (28.29 %) from tracheal aspirates, 24 (11.70 %) from blood , 11 (5.36 %) from wound cultures. API Candida (Bio Merieux, Fransa) kits were used for identification.

From the clinical samples, 115 (56.09 %) C. albicans, 23 (11.21 %) C. tropicalis, 21 (10.24 %) C. parapsilosis, 12 (5.83 %) C. glabrata, 9 (4.39 %) C. kefyr, 7 (3.41 %) C. lusitaniae, 6 (2.92 %) C. famata, 6 (2.92 %) C. crusei, 6 (2.92 % ) C. guilliermondii were isolated.

In all of the sample groups the most frequently observed species was C. albicans, the second most frequently observed ones were, C. tropicalis in urine and tracheal cultures, C. parapsilosis in blood cultures, C. parapsilosis and C. glabrata in wound cultures.

The invitro antifungal susceptibility testing results using E test showed that 19.51% of the strains were resistant to Amp B,27.31% to fluconazole and 20.0% to flusitozin.
