Keywords: Enterobacteriaceae, identification table |
There are more than 30 genera and more than 130 species in Enterobacteriaceae . The most commonly isolated bacteria are Escherichia coli, Shigella serogrup A,B,C,D, some Salmonella serotypes, Citrobacter freundii, Citrobacter diversus, Edwardsiella tarda, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Enterobacter cloacae, Hafnia alvei, Serratia marcescens, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Providencia rettgeri, Providencia stuartii, Providencia alcalifaciens, Morganella morganii, Yersinia enterocolitica, Yersinia pestis and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.
The identification of Enterobacteriaceae could be done by biochemical tests. For this purpose, the most commonly used media are KIA and tryptone broth.
The use of classical evaluation tables is not practical in the evaluation of biochemical features of Enterobacteriaceae. Moreover evaluation of these tables could be time-consuming, especially for those who are at the beginning of microbiology residency programme. For this purpose, we composed an identification table evaluating features of Enterobacteriaceae both in KIA and tryptone broth media. With the aid of this table the identification of commonly isolated Enterobacteriaceae could be easier and not timeconsuming.
