In this study, we examined 159 Β haemolytic streptococci isolate from 2979 upper and lower respitory tract specimens of adult patients in 1998, retrospectively. Strains were isolated according to the classical methods and group determination of the isolates were performed by latex aglutination test. 2019 of the specimens were from lower and 960 were from upper respiratory tract specimens. 100 (30A, 21F, 18G, 17C, 1B, 1D) of 159 Β haemolytic streptoccci were isolated from throat swabs, 57 (16F, 14A, 10G, 6C, 2B) from sputa and 2 from traceal aspirates and ear secretions. The isolation rates of groups A,F,G,C,B,D were as follows respectively:44(28%), 37 (23%), 29 (18%), 24 (15%), 3(1.8%),1(0.6%) and 21 (13%) non-groupable. Penicillin and erythromycin were tested against all isolates by the disk diffusion method according to the NCCLS recommendations. All groups were found to be susceptible to penicillin, 21(13%) were resistant and 4(3%) were moderately susceptible to penicillin while 21 (13%) were resistant and 4 (3%) were moderately susceptible to erythromycin. Resistance rates of the throat and sputum samples were found as 10% and 18% respectively.
