In the Microbiology Laboratory of the Florence Nightingale Hospital 44 fungal strains were isolated from 570 clinical samples which were sent from the surgical and intensive care units between January 1st 1998 and January 1st 1999. Identification of the fungi were made by BBL Mycotube method. They were diagnosed as; 28 (63.6%) Candida albicans, 9(20.4%) Candida crusei, 5(11%) Torulopsis glabrata, 2 (5%) Candida parapsilosis. Candida species and other fungi which are in the flora in normal conditions may be the cause of endogenous infections or nosocomial infections in open heart surgery the supression of immunity by the extracorporeal circulation antibiotic therapy after operation.
Our study showed that C.crusei was the most frequently isolated species in cases with fungemia and in 5 cases which resulted mortally. In our study most frequently isolated species was found to be C. albicans and in mortal cases, the most frequently isolated species was found be C.crusei. Our results were parallel to recent literature which declared that there were differences in the distribution of Candida types in mortal cases in intensive care units. |
