The Toxoplasmosis in the Soldiers in Contact with Animals and a Questionnaire Study

The puppose of the study was to diagnose toxoplasmosis by IFAT, at the Military Veterinary School of Veterinary Medicine and Training Center, during October-November 1999. There were three investigation groups and every group had thirty soldiers. In the first group which only contacted with dogs, the seropositivity rate of toxoplasmosis was found as 26.67%; in the second group, which had contact with different species of animals,the rate was found as 36.67%; and in the third group, which had no contact with any kind of animals, the rate was found as 6.67%. The differences of the rates among the three groups were found significant p<0.05 between first and third groups, p<0.01 between second and third groups.

According to the results of the questionnaire study, the soldiers in the seropositive groups either had a habit of eating uncooked meat or meatball, or they owned a pet or had relation with animals; they positive history for an abortion stillbirth abnormal birt or in their family and/or their animals, had a habit of washing hands at the kitchen basin there were street dogs and cats in their reighborhood; and the sewerage conditions in their area were not healthy. On the other hand, rates of habits of cleaning their hands by using soap, taking a few showers in a week, and trimming their finger nails and toe nails were significantly higher in the seronegative group. Mos of the seropositive group members were living with their family in one room and their drinking was not healthy; and this found to be significant, statistically. Also the differences in prevalence of toxoplasmosis were significant among owners of one or more species of animals.
