Keywords: Wound infections, anaerobic bacteria

In this study specimens taken from a total of 526 infection sites that were sent by several clinics to the Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology Laboratories of Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty between the dates of May 1997- May 2002, were studied to determine the distrubition of anaerobic bacteria. These specimens were 217 surgical wounds, 52 soft tissues, 12 bite wounds, 71 burn wounds, 96 diabetic foot wounds and 78 decubitus ulcers.

At the end of the study, the anaerobic bacteria isolated in a high rate were Prevotella melaninogenica (%69,4), Clostridium butyricum (%62,7), Peptostreptococcus anaerobius (%54,2) and Clostridium tertium (%52,5) in surgical wound specimens, Schleiferella asaccharolytica (%66,6) in soft tissue specimens, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius (%75) and Fusobacterium mortiferum (%62,5) in bite wound specimens, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius (%83,6), Clostridium limosum (%75,4), Porphyromonas asaccharolytica (%67,2), Clostridium butyricum (%67,2), Prevotella melaninogenica (%63,9), Bacteroides capillosus (%62,3) and Clostridium tertium (%60,6) in diabetic foot wounds, Clostridium butyricum (%71,7), Prevotella melaninogenica (%66,6), Bacteroides fragilis (%65,3) and Clostridium limosum (%60,2) in decubitus ulcers.
