Keywords: Transfusion malaria, blood donors, Mersin

The increase in blood transfusions and travels to endemic regions has led an increase in transfusion malaria cases. Ever since the report of the first incidence of transfusion malaria up until today, over 3000 cases have been reported worldwide. Reports have generally come from countries where malaria is not endemic. It is anticipated that, in countries where malaria is endemic, this disease has a higher risk of transmission through blood transfusion. No blood transfusion associated malaria has been reported in Mersin, which is located in Strata 1A region. We have intended to make a Plasmodium investigation in the blood donors who have applied for blood donation to the Blood Center of Mersin Universty, Faculty of Medicine, and discuss whether or not a routine application of this practice is necessary in the blood centers in endemic regions
