In this study, specimens taken from patients suspected of chronic otitis media, were investigated by microbiological methods. From a total of 250 specimens, in 59 (23.6%) no growth, in 102 (40.8 %) normal flora members and in 89 (35.6 %) pathogen microorganisms were observed.

26 (29.2 %) of the isolates were Staphylococcus aureus, 16 (18.0 %) Esherichia coli, 13(14.6 %) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 12 (13.5%) Proteus spp., 10 (11.2 %) Aspergillus spp., 5 (5.7 %) Candida albicans, 3 (3.4 %) Klebsiella spp., 2 (2.2 %) Streptococcus pneuoniae and 2 (2.2%) Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci. Antibiotic susceptibilities of the isolates were investigated by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Susceptibilities of the isolates against ampicillin and ampicillin+sulbactam were respectively as follows: for S. aureus 69.2% and 96.1 %, for E. coli 31.2 % and 75%, for P. aeruginosa 7.7% and 15.4 %, for Proteus spp. 25 % and 66.7 %, for Klebsiella spp 33.3 % and 66.7 %, for S. pneumoniaea 50 % and 100%, Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci 100% and 100%. Our results showed that, for otitis media, the pathogen microrganism must be isolated and therapy must be planned according to the results of susceptibilty tests.
