Keywords: Listeria, milk and milk products

Listeria spp were investigated in a total of 511 specimens including 271 cheese, 221 milk, 11 lor and eight butter collected from Istanbul, Thrace and different regions of Anatolia. For this purpose, the specimens were incubated in enriched medium for one day and seven days in parallel, before inoculation onto lithium chloride-phenylethanol moxolactam agar (LPM) and Oxford selective agar plates, according to the recommendations of Food and Drug Administration ( FDA). The isolation rates from these media were found equal. 11 L. monocytogenes ( 4 %) and one L.grayi (0.36 %) strains from cheese, one L.monocytogenes (0.45 %) strain from raw milk and one L. monocytogenes (12 %) strain from butter specimens were isolated. Of the 13 L. monocytogenes strains, seven were found to be serotype 1 and six serotype 4 by using Listeria polyvalent O1 and O4 antisera.
