Tuberculosis is an important world-wide public health problem. Drug resistant tuberculosis threatens efforts to control the disease. Effectiv treatments according to susceptibility testing can also inhibit the spread of resistant isolates. This study was don to determine the resistant M. tuberculosis strains isolated in the tuberculosis laboratory of Dokuz Eylül Üniversity Hospital to first line drugs. Drug susceptibility testing was performed by agar proportion method with streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampin, and ethambutol against 237 isolates identified as Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex from 2000 through 2002. From 2000 to 2002, while the proportion of monoresistance was 6.0%, 12.4%, 25.6%; multidrug ressitance was 0%, 1.1%, 3.7%, respectively. The proportion of M. tuberculosis strains resistant to streptomycin were 1.5%, 3.4%, 9.8%; to isoniazid 0%, 7.9%, 11.0%; to rifampin 1.5%, 10.1%, 14.6% and to ethambutol 3.0%, 4.5%, 4.9% in 2002, 2001, and 2002 respectively. The resistance of the strains to streptomycin, isoniazid, and rifampin obtained from patients in 2000 and 2002 were compared with each other and this difference was statistically significant. In this study, it was shown that there was an increase in the proportion of M. tuberculosis strains resistant to primary drugs during 2000-2002. To be successful in national tuberculosis control programs, extended studies are needed to determine the drug resistance
