Evaluation of Tinea capitis and Pediculosis capitis Prevalence in Primary School Children with Different Socioeconomic Status in Istanbul

7158 students from seven primary schools which were chosen randomly from socio–economically different districts of Istanbul were examined between 1999-2001 for Tinea capitis and Pediculosis capitis. The samples of hair, hairy skin scrappings taken from students who were suspects of Tinea capitis and Pediculosis were examined directly under microscope and by cultural methods. The prevalence of Tinea capitis was found 00.5% in high and medium socio-economic status and 01.5% in low socio-economic status Microsporum canis was isolated from a case determined positive with either microscopic or cultural methods. The differences between prevalence values according to socio-economic status, age and gender were not significant. The prevelance of Pediculosis capitis for high, medium and low socio-economic status were found 03.8%, 010.9% and 041.2% respectively. Although the differences between prevalence values according to socio-economic status and gender were found highly significant, the difference between age groups was not significant when evaluated by age.
