In this study, in order to evaluate fungal colonization of patients admitted to pediatric hematology- oncology unit of Marmara University Hospital between October 2000 to September 2001, swab samples were taken from nostrils, oral cavity, rectum and axillary regions. Samples were taken in the first day of hospitalization and procedure was repeated in the 3rd- 7th day and once in a week during the hospitalization period. Candida species were isolated from 102(20.5%) of 496 samples. Seven out of 21 patients remained non-colonized during the study period whereas five patients were initially colonized. Nine patients were colonized during the hospitalization. Candida strains were typed to species level and all the isolates except one C. kefyr, one C. tropicalis, one C. glabrata were evaluated as albicans. Genotypic analysis of oropharyngeal Candida albicans strains colonised in 12 patients revealed that the same genotype was persisted in three patients for more than three months and no cross- colonisation between patients was demonstrated. Systemic candidasis was detected in any of the patients.
