Enterococcus spp. lead the second place after Staphylococcus spp. among the nosocomial infections. Moreover, Enterococcus species especially E. faecium carry vital importance due to their multi drug resistance (MDR). The aim of this study was to investigate the ratio and antibiotic sensitivity of enterococcus species in hospital infections. The urine samples were obtained from the patients who stayed in the hospital at least 3 days. Typing of enterococcus species were performed using API 20 Strep (Biomerieux, France), subsequently, antibiotic sensitivity was determined by disk diffusion method according to CLSI criteria.

A total of 84 Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) and 18 Enterococcus faecium (E.faecium) from the total of 108 enterococcus were detected. The remaining 6 strain could not be classified. While a striking resistance to both quinolons (%72) and high dose aminoglycosides (%46) were determined, all strains were found to be sensitive to vancomycin. The result show that, although it is a quite acceptable to get negative urine samples for VRE within the last six mounts, the remarkable incidence of resistance to high level aminoglycosides points out to the gradually increased importance of Enterococcus spp. in nosocomial infections. Therefore, antibiotic regimens should be adjusted based on these observations.
