CHROMagar Candida is a new differential medium that allows selective isolation of yeasts and simultaneously identifies colonies of Candida albicans, C. tropicalis, C. krusei, C. glabrata and C. parapsilosis. Colony morphology and color have been well defined when CAC has been used to isolate yeast directly from clinical specimens. We evaluated the designation of effectiveness and ability of this medium with 35 stock Candida strains, isolated from different clinical specimens, between February 2002-Agust 2003, and 283 hemoculture specimens which yeast cells were determined, between September 2003- March 2006. As a control the same isolates were inoculated on SDA simultaneously. Stock and clinical isolates, consisting of over 92-94% of C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. Krusei and C. glabrata, were correctly identified on the basis of colony morphology. Direct isolation could allow mycology laboratories to more rapidly identify Candida strains, enable clinicians to more quickly make antifungal drug selections, and potentially decreases patient mortality and morbidity.
