Keywords: Acinetobacter baumannii, antibiotic combinations, E test method

This study was performed to investigate the in vitro effect of various antibiotic combinations on 20 multiresistant nosocomial Acinetobacter baumannii strains. The in vitro activity of cefepim-netilmicin (FEP-NET), cefepim-ampisillin/sulbactam (FEP-SAM), cefepim-ciprofloxacin (FEP-CIP), imipenem-netilmicin (IMP-NET), imipenem-ciprofloxacin (IMP-CIP), ampisillin/ sulbactam-netilmicin (SAM-NET), ampislilin/sulbactam-ciprofloxacin (SAM-CIP) combination were studied by the E test method. For the tested seven antibiotic combinations 140 FIC index were calculated. Indifference, additive, antagonist, and synergistic effects were found as 68 (%48.6), 52 (%37.1), 12 (%8.6) and eight (%5.7), respectively. IMP-NET, FEP- NET and FEP-CIP combinations were found synergistic against five (25 %), two (10%) and one (%5) of the 20 tested strains, respectively. It was concluded that the use of in-vitro antibiotic combination tests would be a guide to choose the most appropriate treatment of nosocomial infections caused by multiresistant A. baumannii strains in our hospital.
