Infections caused by mutliple drug resistant bacteriae are a major problem in the world. The most common isolated pathogens from these infections are extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) positive Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. To prevent resistance development, combination of two antibiotics is required. In this study, it was aimed to investigate activity of tigecycline in combination with gatifloxacin, and levofloxacin on ESBL positive E. coli and K. pneumoniae strains. Minimum inhibitory consantration values of tigecycline, gatifloxacin, and levofloxacin were determined by E-test and the effects of the combinations of tigecycline with gatifloxacin and levofloxacin were investigated. While low level resistance was shown on the strains to tigecycline, high level resistance was determined to gatifloxacin, and levofloxacin. When tigecycline was combined with gatifloxacin and levofloxacin, additive/indifference effect was shown in all the isolates. Besides synergism, antagonism was not detected in any of the strains.
