Over recent years the main transmission route of hepatitis E virus (HEV) has been through faecal-oral transmission; however
some studies stressed the parenteral transmission of HEV. Th e aim of this study was to evaluate of whether HEV can be
transmitted to patients through blood transmission who are undergoing major orthopaedic surgery. 55 elective orthopaedic
surgery patients who required blood transfusions and their 101 blood donors were included in the study. Th e patient sera were
tested for HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HEV IgG and anti-HEV IgM preoperatively by micro EIA method. Th e blood donors which
were negative HBsAg and anti-HCV, were investigated for anti-HEV IgG and anti-HEV IgM. Both serologic tests were performed
for the patient blood samples 1 month aft er the operation. HBsAg and anti-HCV were negative in all patients both preoperatively
and postoperatively. Anti-HEV IgG and IgM were positive in 9 and 2 blood donor samples, respectively. In patients
sera, anti-HEV IgG were positive in 5 patients preoperatively and postoperatively. However, anti-HEV IgM was found negative
in all patients. As a result, even though two donors had acute HEV infection, blood transfusion hepatitis did not develop in
patients. It is concluded that, there is minimal risk of HEV infection through blood transfusion.
