Candida genus are most frequently isolated yeasts in the clinical microbiology laboratories. Species identification is very important
in the genus because diff erent Candida species have variable antifungal susceptibility patterns. In this study, Sabouraud
dextrose agar, Eosin Metilen Blue agar, Corn Meal- Tween 80 agar, Potato Dextrose agar and Mueller Hinton agar plates were
compared for the determination of species specific morphology on agar plates. Twenty clinical strains and three reference
strains were inoculated into agar plates. Microscopic morphology of the colonies of Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Candida
glabrata, Candida parapsilosis, Candida pelliculosa, Candida krusei, Candida dubliniensis, Candida kefyr, Candida famata,
Candida rugosa species were investigated. All the colonies were documented visually. Diff erentiative and morphologicaly typical
colonies were detected in Candida krusei, C. glabrata, C. rugosa species, while other species has no typical morphological
features. It was demonstrated that MHA plates could be easly visualized for colony morphology. Typical colony morphologies
of some Candida species were detected on routine media which is widely used in microbiology laboratories.
