Keywords: Toxoplasma gondii, anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG avidity

Objective: Toxoplasmosis which is a parasitic illness caused by Toxoplasma gondii, may lead to congenital infection resulting in abortion or birth of fetus with several anomalies. Thus prenatal diagnosis of toxoplasmosis is of crucial importance. This study was performed to retrospectively evaluate the toxoplasma serological profiles of pregnant women who were admitted to the hospital for anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG avidity testing.

Materials and Methods: Serum samples were collected from 130 pregnant women admitted to the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic of Gaziantep University Hospital, Turkey, between June 2007 and January 2009. Toxoplasma gondii IgM and IgG antibodies were investigated by Enzyme Linked Fluorescent Assay (ELFA) technique. Subsequently, Toxoplasma gondii IgG avidity was determined by ELFA method.

Results: While Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibody positivity was determined in all patients, anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgM was positive in 68 (52.3%), negative in 56 (43.1%) and borderline in six (4.6%) subjects. Among the 68 anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgM positive subjects, 20 (15.4%) were found to have high avidity, 42 (32.3%) presented low avidity and six (4.6%) had borderline avidity. Fifty (38.5%) anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgM negative subjects presented high-avidity and the number of each low-avidity and borderline avidity presenting subjects was three (%2.3). In subjects having borderline anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgM, 5 (3.8%) were found to have high-avidity and only one (0.8%) had low-avidity. In all subjects who were investigated for anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG avidity testing, high-avidity was found in 75 (57.7%), and low-avidity was found in 46 (35.4%). Borderline value avidity was determined in nine (6.9%) subjects.

Conclusion: It was concluded that the determination of IgG avidity in Toxoplasma gondii IgG and IgM positive pregnant women might help to differentiate acute toxoplasmosis from a past infection and act accordingly.
