Keywords: Superficial fungal infections, dermatophytes |
Objective: There is a significant increase in superficial fungal infections due to the increased use of immunosupressive
agents and alteration in life style owing to developing technology. To determine the incidence and the related
factors for the spread of fungal infections is important to control and avoid the development of superficial fungal
infections. This study was conducted to determine the common causative superficial fungal infections agents at
Kahramanmaraş region located at the southeastern part of Turkey.
Materials and Methods: Skin and nail scrapings were collected from 338 patients who had applied to two state hospitals in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey with the initial diagnosis of superficial fungal infection. The samples were treated with 15 % KOH for microscopic examination and then inoculated onto Sabouraud Dextrose Agar. Results: Fungal agents were determined in 44.7 % and in 22 % of 338 patients by microscopic examination and culture respectively. Among the 78 identified fungi, 84.6 % were dermatophytes and 15.4 % were Candida species. Trichophyton rubrum was the most prevalent isolated fungi. Conclusion: Since the epidemiological features of superficial fungal infections may vary in time, the determination of the agents of such infections and to study their epidemiology seem to be important to guide treatment protocols of superficial mycosis. |
