Staphylococcus aureus is one of the leading causative agents of both community acquired and nosocomial infections all over the world. The incidence of methicillin resistant S. aureus infections has been reported to be uniformly high particularly in intensive care units. It has been a well-known fact that most methicillin resistant S. aureus are susceptible to vancomycin, however, since the last few years there has been reports of vancomycin intermediate or to a lesser degree vancomycin resistant S. aureus strains. Thus the emerging antibiotic resistance in S .aureus strains may lead to treatment difficulties in the clinical setting. Studies focusing the efficacy of new antimicrobial agents in the treatment of resistant S. aureus infections exhibit an increasing trend recently. Several new drugs, including linezolid, daptomycin, tigecycline, quinupristin-dalfopristin, ceftobiprole, new glycopeptides and iclaprim are promising antimicrobial agents for the treatment of serious infections caused by S. aureus.
