Keywords: Blood donor, seroprevalence |
Objective: HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HIV and VDRL screening of donated blood is obligatory in our country in order to
prevent the transmission of transfusion-related infections. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the
microbiological screening test results of blood donations for the last 10 years.
Materials and methods: HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HIV and VDRL screening test results of blood donated at Blood
Bank and Training Center of Gülhane Military Medicine Academy (Time Limited Regional Blood Bank) between
2000 and 2009, were retrospectively evaluated.
Results: HBsAg positivity was 1.96%, anti-HCV 0.59%, anti-HIV 0.18% and VDRL 0.02%. While HBsAg positivity
rate decreased significantly through years, no significant change was detected for the other test parameters.
Conclusion: These results were promising in terms of hepatitis B virus epidemiology in our country, however, no
change in anti-HCV positivity through years deserves attention.
