Tigecycline Susceptibility Among Gram Negative Bacteria

Objective: Tigecycline which is chemically a minocycline derivative, is active against many gram- positive and gram- negative organisms in vitro. The objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of Acinetobacter baumannii, Echerichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae against tigecycline, cefoperazone/sulbactam and imipenem.

Materials and Methods: In this study a total of 56 A. baumannii, 43 E. coli and 47 K. pneumoniae isolates identified and tested for susceptibility to relevant antimicrobials by an automated bacterial identification and susceptibility testing system, were analyzed by disk diffusion, and E test for the determination of susceptibilities against tigecycline, imipenem and cefoperazone/sulbactam. The presence of extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESBL) was confirmed by using E test strips containing ceftazidime and ceftazidime/clavulonate.

Results: The highest rate of resistance was found against imipenem (59%) among A. baumannii, and against cefoperazon/sulbactam among E. coli and K. pneumoniae strains. One (2%) of the ESBL (+) E. coli strains was found resistant againt both imipenem and tigecycline. No tigecycline resistance was detected among ESBL (+) K. pneumoniae strains, and one imipenem resistant K. pneumoniae strain. Resistance to tigecycline was determined in 51% of imipenem resistant A. baumannii strains.

Conclusion: While tigecycline resistance was rare among ESBL(+) and imipenem resistant E. coli and K. pneumonia strains, it was common among imipenem resistant A. baumannii strains.
