Keywords: HIV-1, subtype

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the subtypes of HIV-1 strains isolated from HIV/AIDS patients.

Materials and Methods: A total of 34 plasma samples were studied (24 males, 10 females; mean age 36.7 years). First 1056 bases of the pol gene were directly sequenced from plasma of these 34 individuals and the sequences were used for genotypic analyses.

Results: The majority of the HIV-1 isolates were found to be subtype B virus (61.8%). Subtypes A1 (14.7%), C (11.8%), G (8.8%), and CRF02_AG (2.9%) were also determined. Although HIV-1 subtype B is the dominant one, other subtypes were also identified.

Conclusion: Our findings in the study and the bridging structure of the geographic localization of Turkey indicated the need for the national surveillance of the subtypes of HIV.
