Objective: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are becoming increasingly difficult to combat because of emerging resistance to several antibiotic classes. Vancomycin is still the antibiotic of the first choice for the treatment of systemic infections caused by MRSA. However, as a result of limited tissue distribution and reduced susceptibility to vancomycin in some strains, the need for alternative therapies that target MRSA has become apparent. The aim of this study is to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial efficacy of alternative antibiotics against MRSA infections.

Materials and Methods: A total of 99 MRSA strains isolated from blood samples between 2003 and 2010 were included in this study. Antibiotic susceptibilities of the MRSA strains to vancomycin, tigecycline, linezolid and daptomycin were studied by the Etest method and evaluated according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) criteria.

Results: Susceptibility of one MRSA (1%) isolate to vancomycin was found to be moderately sensitive according to CLSI criteria while it was found resistant according to EUCAST criteria. All isolates were susceptible to linezolid and daptomycin while four isolates (4%) were resistant to tigecycline.

Conclusion: It was concluded that linezolid and daptomycin may be alternative agents for the treatment of MRSA infections, however, continuous resistance surveillance of these antibiotics against MRSA strains should be established.
