This study investigates the carriage of orofaringeal Streptococcus pneumoniae in 110 children in nursery school and 24 children in day-care center and 155 people in rest home. Orofaringeal samples taken from our study group where examined by classical methods. Oxacillin, ceftriaxon, ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, erythromycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMPSMX) and clarithromycin resistance of strains where investigated by Kirby-Bauer diffusion method and they where evaluated according to NCCLS criteria. S. pneumoniae was isolated from 10 of the elder people in rest home (6.4%), 3 of the children in nursery school (2.8%) and 1 of the children in day-care center (4.1%). Oxacillin resistance(MIC ≥3μg/ml) was detected in only 1 of (7.1%) (from nursery school isolates) 14 S. pneumoniae strains isolated from our study group. While ceftriaxon, ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, erythromycin and clarithromycin resistance is not detected, resistance to TMP-SMX was detected in 3 strains (21.42%) (from rest home isolates).
