Aim: Acute gastroenteritis is one of the most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality in children. Rotavirus and enteric adenoviruses are the most important agents of infectious gastroenteritis. With this study, we aimed to determine the incidence of rotavirus and enteric adenovirus gastroenteritis in patients admitted to the outpatient clinics of pediatrics at Sivas State Hospital in Sivas, Turkey.

Material and Methods: The stool specimens of a total of 2988 patients admitted to the hospital between 01.01.2013 and 01.01.2014 due to acute gastroenteritis were evaluated retrospectively for the presence of rotavirus and enteric adenoviruses. Rotavirus and enteric adenovirus antigens were investigated in the fresh stool specimens using an immunochromotographic assay (ABON Biopharm Rota/Adeno, China).

Results: In 1082 of the 2988 stool specimens, viral antigens were determined. Of these 1082 specimens, rotavirus was identified in 25.9%, adenovirus in 8.4%, both rotavirus and adenovirus in 1.9%. Cases with viral gastroenteritis were mostly seen during autumn and winter.

Conclusion: Viral gastroenteritis is usually seen in children during autumn and winter. It was concluded that common viral agents of gastroenteritis should be routinely investigated during the diagnostic process of gastrointestinal infections.
