In the last twenty years reports informing about penicillin resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae strains have been increasing. The rate of penicillin resistance may show difference among the countries and even in different regions of a country. In this study, we aimed to study the rates of low and high level resistance in S. pneumoniae strains. Between January 2003- September 2004 total of 115 S. pneumoniae strains isolated from several clinical specimens in the Bacteriology Laboratory of Ege University Medical Faculty, Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology Department were taken to the study. Conventional microbiological methods were used for isolation and identification of the bacteria. To determine the Minimal Inhibition Concentration values of penicillin for pneumococci E-test (AB-Biodisk) method was used. Twenty-six (16.8 %) of 155 strains were found to be resistant to penicillin. Low level resistance (MIC=0.12-1 mg/l) were found in twenty-four (15.5%) and high level resistance (MIC = 2 mg/l) were found in two (1.3%) of the resistant isolates. These results show that penicillin is still appropriate in the empirical treatment of the pneumococcal infections except meningitis in our region.
