Objective: Acute gastroenteritis is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in children. Rotavirus is one of the most frequent and important agents of viral gastroenteritis in infants and children throughout the world. This study was aimed to determine the frequency of rotavirus gastroenteritis in pediatric patients admitted to Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.
Materials and Methods: Presence of rotavirus in the stool specimens of a total of 929 patients admitted between January 2012 and January 2013 with complaints of acute gastroenteritis, were evaluated retrospectively. Rotavirus antigens were investigated in fresh stool specimens with the rotavirus Rapid test (Biocare Diagnostics Ltd., China) which is a rapid immunochromatographic assay for the qualitative presumptive detection of rotavirus. Results: In 71 (7.64%) stool specimens, rotavirus antigens were detected. Viral antigen- positive cases were most frequently seen during the winter and summer seasons and in children between 0-24 months of age. Conclusion: The presence of rotavirus which is the most prevalent causative agent of gastroenteritis in children under 2 years of age, should routinely be investigated. |
