The aim of the present study was to investigate the positivity of HCV RNA by polimerase chain reaction (PCR) in patients with positive and negative anti-HCV. The sera of patients sent to the Routine Laboratory, Dicle University Hospital were studied. Serum samples obtained from 95 patients with suspected HCV infection were analyzed. Anti-HCV was found to be positive in 178 ( 69.8%) and negative in 77 (30.2%) of the patients. HCV RNA was found to be positive 123 (48.3%) of the patients. Anti-HCV was found to be positive 108 (87.8%) and negative in 15 (12.2%) of patients with positive HCV RNA. It was found that detection of HCV RNA in anti-HCV negative patients were important as in positive patients. Because of that in routine laboratories PCR seemed to be a valuable assay for HCV RNA determination for diagnosis and also following up therapies.
