Objective: Tuberculosis is an important healthcare problem worldwide as well as in Turkey and the control programmes are still in progress. Tuberculosis dispensary records are important to show the incidence of tuberculosis in our country. With this perspective, we aimed to evaluate the characteristics of newly diagnosed patients with tuberculosis admitted to Adana Tuberculosis Control Dispensaries.

Material and Methods: Medical files of the newly diagnosed patients with pulmonary tuberculosis who were registered in Adana Tuberculosis Control Dispensary were retrospectively evaluated as for demographic profiles, diagnoses made, diagnostic methods, adn treatment outcomes.

Results: A total of 232 new tuberculosis cases were detected in 2013 after investigation of medical files. Eighteen (7.7%) pulmonary tuberculosis cases had concurrent extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Of all the cases, 63.7% had ARB positive, 24.5% had ARB negative results and, blood smear was not performed in 11.6% of the cases. Among smear - positive 148 cases, 95 of them were cured. In 123 (67.5%) of all the cases Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex was isolated in culture. Drug susceptibility tests for isoniazid, rifampicin, streptomycin and ethambutol were performed in only 111 culture - positive cases and the resistance rates were 13.5%, 1.8%, 8.1% and 2.7%; respectively. Multidrug resistant tuberculosis, was isolated 1.8% of the cases.

Conclusion: Increasing interinstitutional cooperation, and notification of the patients to tuberculosis control dispensaries should be performed with due care. For accurate treatment, monitoring resistance patterns will be useful in determining the treatment protocols to be applied and in preventing resistance development in the long term. We think that the results of our study are important in terms of reflecting the resistance status of the region, showing the results of the treatment outcomes, and guiding for more comprehensive studies.
