Keywords: Toxoplasma gondii, congenital toxoplasmosis, seroprevalence

Objective: Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite that can infect all mammals and birds. Infection with T. gondii usually does not cause clinical symptoms in humans, but an acute infection during pregnancy can lead to congenital toxoplasmosis. In our study, it was aimed to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii in women who applied to our obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics.

Material and Methods: In this study, 4941 women (including 1007 pregnants) aged between 15-49 years who applied to our obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics between January 2015 and December 2017 were retrospectively evaluated as for anti-T. gondii IgM and anti-T. gondii IgG antibody titers. Anti-T. gondii IgG avidity test was performed in women who were found to have positive anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM positivity.

Results: Anti-T. gondii IgG positivity was detected in 20.5% (n=1015) of all women. Anti-T. gondii IgG positivity was detected in 261 (25.9%) pregnancies. In 33 women (0.6%), combined anti-T. gondii IgG and anti-T. gondii IgM positivity was found None of the patients had anti-T. gondii IgM positivity alone. All of the avidity test results demonstrated high levels of avidity.

Conclusion: In conclusion, this study is the first to demonstrate seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in our region, and nearly 80% of women are infected with this infection and their infants are at risk of developing congenital toxoplasmosis. For this reason, it is important to evaluate pregnant women and women who plan pregnancy from the point of acute toxoplasmosis and to raise awareness about prevention methods from infections.
