In this study, vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) were evaluated from clinical samples which were sent from patients of intensive care units and also from patients of different departments of Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, Turkey. Also medical staff, patient companions who were in contact with those patients were screened along with the hospital environment for the presence of VRE. Three of eight VRE were isolated from patient's clinical specimens, 2 were from the study group that colonization was screened and 3 were isolated from environmental smear samples. All VRE strains were identified as Enterococcus faecium and no beta-lactamase activity was determined. Strains resistant to ampicillin were found in the mean time resistant to high level gentamycin, streptomycin and teicoplanin. By PCR the vancomycin resistance was found to be as Van A type resistance. By PFGE (Pulsed Field Gel Electroforesis) it was found that the VRE strains were from 4 different clones. There were no correlation between the VRE strains.
