Wastewater Based Epidemiology (WBE) is a successful environmental surveillance tool, which serves as a valuable information pool containing enormous data on public health. Efforts are being made globally to overcome the unprecedented worldwide spread of SARS-CoV-2 and its negative consequences on human health and the ecosystem. In this review, we present the difficulties encountered in detecting SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and the comparison of methods used for virus concentration and measurement.

A WBE framework adapted for SARS-CoV-2 is a key step towards the development of an early warning system. Monitoring virus spread through wastewater surveillance will reduce limitations of clinical tests. For effective management of virus control in asymptomatic cases, it should be considered that the virus has a long incubation period and continues to be transmitted during that period.

Using optimized diagnostic protocols, developing disinfection strategies, and obtaining further scientific evidence on potential problems associated with waste water reuse will help improve the detection and control of future viral disease outbreaks.
