Keywords: Streptococcus pneumoniae, penicillin, macrolide, fluoroquinolone, antimicrobial resistance

In this study, antimicrobial susceptibilities of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from lower respiratory tract samples of the adult patients with community acquired pneumonia between January 2004 - January 2005 were assessed. Following the identification of 104 pneumococci with classical methods, their antimicrobial susceptibilities were performed with disc diffusion method. The resistance rates of the pneumococci to penicillin, erythromycin, azithromycin, and clarithromycin were 23%, 25%, 29%, and 23%, respectively. Among the fluoroquinolones, pneumococci were resistant 5.8% to ofloxacin, 6.7% to ciprofloxacin, whereas all of the isolates were susceptible to levofloxacin and moxifloxacin. Due to the increased use of macrolides in penicillin nonsusceptible cases, their resistance rates are growing. On the other hand, fluoroquinolones have still satisfactory in vitro activity against pneumococci.
