Objective: Echinococus granulosus is a causative agent of cystic echinococcosis (CE) by settling as cysts mostly
in the liver and rarely in the lung and other organs. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of
E. granulosus antibodies in serum samples of patients with suspected cystic echinococcosis (CE) by indirect
haemagglutination (IHA) and immunochromatographic test (ICT) methods and to compare these methods.
Methods: Blood samples of 75 patients with suspected CE between 01/11/2018-31/01/2019 were included in
the study. The presence of E.granulosus IgG antibody was analysed using IHA and ICT methods. With the IHA
method, the reaction at a dilution of 1/160 and above was considered positive, while with the ICT method, the
formation of only the control line on the cassette was considered negative, and the formation of the test line as
well as the control line was considered positive.
Results: 48% of the patients were found positive by IHA method and 45.4% by ICT method. It was observed that
94.4% of the patients who were found positive by IHA were also positive by ICT method. All of the patients who
were found to be negative by IHA method (n = 39) were also found to be negative by ICT method.
Conclusion: Considering the results obtained from the study, it was observed that IHA and ICT results were
compatible with each other in patients with suspected CE, but studies with a larger serum panel are needed to
determine the effectiveness of the tests.
