In this study, 144 S.aureus strains isolated in Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Department of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, Emergency Laboratory, in 2002 were investigated. The antibiotic susceptibilities of the strains were evaluated by the disk diffusion method according to the recommendations of the NCCLS. Penicillin, erythromycin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, clindamycin, cotrimoxazole, gentamicin and ofloxacin were tested. Of the 144 S.aureus strains, 59 (41% ) were methicillin resistant (MRSA) and 85 (59%) methicillin susceptible (MSSA). For the MRSA strains, the resistance rates were found as follows: ofloxacin 76%, gentamycin 76%, erythromycin 64%, clindamycin 45%, cotrimoxasole 6%; and for the MSSA strains as ofloxacin 8%, gentamycin 7%, erythromycin 19%, clindamycin 6%, cotrimoxazole 10%.
