The importance of S. pneumoniae infections has gradually increased recently, because of resistance to penicillin and severe clinical course of the pneumococcal infections in AIDS patients. The diagnosis and treatment of pneumococcal infections were improved because of the clinical and immunological studies about the pathogenesis of pneumococcal infections. In this article, the pathogenesis of pneumococcal infections is reviewed for both microorganisms and host defense mechanisms.
