E.sakazakii is a dangerous bacteria which causes menegitis and enteritis in infants especially in neonates, premature and babies of HIV positive mothers. Until recently, there has not been enough information about the bacteria's ecology, taxonomy, virulence and other characteristics. Although it has been detected in various foods and other environmental sources, powdered infant formulas are reported as the main sources of outbreaks. Improper handling or storage of powdered infant formulas which are not sterile and susceptibility of neonates to foodborne diseases are given as the main reasons of E.sakazakii outbreaks. In this review article, information about morphological, physiological and ecological characteristics, pathogenesis and virulence factors, contamination points and analysis methods of E.sakazakii and prevention ways from infection was summarized.
