Objective: Tinea pedis is a common dermatophyte infection all over the world. In this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency and distribution of fungi in the samples submitted with the preliminary diagnosis of tinea pedis.

Materials and Methods: In this study, 942 samples obtained from 921 patients with the preliminary diagnosis of tinea pedis and sent to mycology laboratory between March 2008 and June 2010 from Dermatology Clinic, were examined.

Results: Direct microscopic examination of the samples yielded positive results for fungi in 45.5% of the samples. Significant growth was determined in %33.9 of the cultures. The isolated fungi were 76.5% Trichophyton rubrum, 5% Trichophyton mentagrophytes, 1% Trichophyton verrucosum, 0.3% Trichophyton tonsurans, 0.6% Epidermophyton floccosum, 15% non-albicans Candida spp. and 1.6% Candida albicans.

Conclusion: In this study, similar to the results of other studies in the literature, T. rubrum was found to be the most common causative agent of tinea pedis.
