Keywords: Yeasts, pathogenicity, evolution

Today, it is well known that virulence is a result of the relationship between the host and the microorganism. Indeed, virulence is a characteristic encoded by genes expressed only in susceptible hosts. It is suggested that the reason of the increase in the frequency of emerging and re-emerging infections in recent years is mostly due the evolution of pathogenicity rather than ecological, technical and quantitative alterations.

Although the candidiasis cases caused by non-albicans species has increased in recent years, Candida albicans, generally recognized as an opportunistic pathogen by many researchers, is the major pathogenic Candida species today. Cryptococcus neoformans needs to be emphasized as a primary pathogen.

Adhesins, proteolytic- and lipolytic enzymes, phenotypic changes, biofilm formation and Hsp90 are to be taken into account as virulence factors of C. albicans. Genotypic differences are determined in strains isolated from clinical specimens and from commensal life. It has been suggested that pathogenic Candida strains have evolved in warm-blooded animals, during commensal life conditions unrelated to invasive invasive infections.

Capsule, melanin, laccase, urease, phospholipase, growth ability at 37°C, titan cells, alterations in the cell wall and Hsp90 are to be taken into account as virulence factors of C. neoformans. It has been shown that C. neoformans have evolved by means of the relationship with certain protozoa, nematodes, arthropods and some mammals that live together in the same environment. The evolution has begun million years ago and is still going on.
