Objective: Results of 19.042 patients admitted to the
Laboratory of Medical Parasitology in Celal Bayar
University Hafsa Sultan Hospital for parasitological stool
examination between January 2011 and December 2015
were evaluated.
Material and Methods: All stool samples were examined
with wet mount (native-Lugol), formaline ethyl acetate
concentration and trichrome staining methods. Besides;
cellophane tape preparations of 7757 patients were
examined.
Results: Intestinal parasites were detected in 1865 (9.79%)
of 19.042 patients who were admitted during a five year
period. The highest rate of parasites (13.19%) was detected
in 2013. The most frequently identified intestinal parasites
were Blastocystis spp. 1.263 (6.63%), Giardia intestinalis
277 (1.45%) and Dientamoeba fragilis 160 (0.84%) in
stool samples. Cellophane tape samples were collected
from 7757 patients and Enterobius vermicularis was
detected in 139. Two or more parasites were detected in
127 (6.33%) of the positive cases. The frequency of
parasites was 11.2% in females and 10.81% in males.
Conclusion: Blastocystis spp., G. intestinalis and D.
fragilis were the most frequently detected intestinal
parasites in patients admitted during a five year period.
Our findings showed that intestinal parasites are an
important public health problem.
