Keywords: Antibacterial activity, oxadiazole compounds, MIC

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the antimicrobial activity results of some heterocyclic oxadiazole compounds (1a-g) against several bacteria. Using the MIC values obtained and various calculated parameters, the relationship between the structures and the activity were evaluated and the effect of the substituent on the biological activity was determined.

Methods: Multiwell microdilution plates (sterile, disposable 96 U-shaped wells) were used for microbroth dilution procedure. Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) were used for the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests. Theoretical calculations for all compounds were made by (RHF-PM3) method.

Results: Oxadiazole compounds have good results against particularly P. aeruginosa which causes nosocomial infections. Among the tested compounds; 1c, 1d and 1f have the best results.

Conclusion: Nowadays, synthesis of new compounds and their activity tests have great importance. According to the results of this study, such oxadiazole compounds can be improved and used for the design of more potent and new classes of antimicrobial agents in the future.
